Surviving & Thriving: Honoring National Young Adult Cancer Awareness Week (April 1 – 7th)
Surviving & Thriving: Honoring National Young Adult Cancer Awareness Week (April 1 – 7th)
The 2018 Man & Woman of the Year (MWOY) Los Angeles Campaign is underway, with 20 very enthusiastic and philanthropic-minded individuals competing for the titles of Man/Woman of the Year. They have set a goal to raise over $1.7 million in 10 short weeks to benefit cancer research and patient services. Each and every one of these candidates has an inspiring story to tell as to why they’ve dedicated their time to this worthy cause, and along with raising as much money as possible, they, along with their fundraising team members, are spreading educational awareness and hope for those who suffer with cancer.
When we hear stories of cancer, we often think of children and older adults being diagnosed, but one demographic is often overlooked or forgotten in the narrative – adolescents & young adults. In honor of National Young Adult Cancer Awareness Week (April 1-7, 2018), we want to recognize this specific demographic and share their stories of surviving & thriving after cancer. Many of our candidates, over half, know how devastating it is to hear the worlds “You have cancer.” And almost all of our survivor candidates heard those words when they were young adults (between 18-39 years old).
Not pictured are Candidate Survivors Racheli Alkobey, Kaitlin Lindsey, Michael Moskowitz, and Elysa Williams.
Approximately 70,000 young adults aged 15-39 are diagnosed with cancer in the United States every year. It is the 4th leading cause of death and each year, over 9,000 young adults die from cancer. This young adult demographic has the poorest cancer survival rate. Lifestyle and environmental factors like smoking, exposure to sun or tanning, stress, and ignoring systems effect this demographic the most. So it is highly recommend that young adults get checked for certain cancers at their regular physical check-ups. Resource: Cancer Resource Center of Finger Lake www.crcfl.net
Our 2018 MWOY candidates prove that early diagnosis, treatment, awareness and research helped improved their rates of survival and quality of life after treatment. We are grateful to these survivors and their fellow candidates for their selfless dedication to our mission.
