Gavin David's Story
Gavin David's Story
On March 28, 2017, Gavin was diagnosed with High-Risk B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of 2. Two days later, he would have surgery to get a port inserted, have a bone marrow aspiration, a spinal tap, and receive chemo in his port and his spine. Gavin spent the next 26 days in the hospital and was declared in remission on May 1, 2017, but his treatment was to continue for a total of 30 months to make sure the leukemia didn’t come back. The first nine months of treatment were weekly or bi-weekly trips to Connecticut Children's for chemo, blood tests and checkups and then he moved on to monthly visits for chemo in his port or spine and took chemo orally at home daily. Gavin spent over 70 nights in the hospital over the 2 and half years of treatment, was sedated 20 times for spinal taps and chemo in his spine, had more than 60 doses of chemo in his port, two bone marrow aspirations, two blood infections, numerous platelet and blood transfusion, and more than 500 doses of oral chemo.
Gavin took his last dose of chemo on September 30, 2019, at the age of 4, and got his port taken out in November 2019. He is 6 now and began kindergarten in the fall of 2020.
